Alarm Systems : Protecting Your Home Made Simple

by Edson Buchanan

Many people are considering installing alarm systems to protect their property. This is an investment in the safety of your home. Hard wired and wireless are the two basic kinds of alarm systems. There are advantages and disadvantages to both kinds, depending on your situation. There are many different features to both.

Wired systems require you to install wiring inside your home's walls, and thus are less expensive if they are being installed into a house under construction. Installing a wired system into a completed house will require drilling and electrical work to run the wires around the house and install the system's components, and there requires very careful planning. Installing a wired system takes more time and money, but results in a system that is better hidden and more reliable.

A wireless security system does not require significant interior modifications or pre-planning. In part because of the newer technology used, once installed, wireless systems tend to require less maintenance than wired systems. However, reception of the video feed from the cameras to the base station can be spotty or inadequate, depending on interference from nearby radio emitters, the layout of the house itself, and the distance of the cameras from the base station receiver. A wired system guarantees the best possible transmittance of the images or video feed to the base station.

In addition, even though wireless system installation is cheaper and requires less time, buying the system itself is generally more costly than purchasing a wired system. There is less component maintenance with a wireless system, but poor reception may force the owner to continually have to move or retune the components. However, you may find this preferable to the more complicated, maintenance prone wired systems which require you to install costly new wiring in order to run them.

The camera's video feed can be watched in real time, recorded so that you can view it later, or both, regardless of whether it is wireless or wired. You may also use motion detection software which will immediately tell the owner if there is an intrusion. Motion detection and video feed can be sent from the base station to a secure website, making it easy for the owner to check on her property while she is away. You may also employ alarm companies to track notification of intrusion for you. If there is an intrusion, they can summon the authorities.

There are a lot of factors that go into choosing the best alarm systems to install for your protection. You should consider differences in price, available features, installation and operation specifications, whether the system is wired or wireless, and all of the various options for each category. Hopefully this article has outlined the topic in a way that provides a good system for making a choice, and we hope you now have a better idea which alarms might work best for you.

There are two types of alarm systems: wired and wireless. Wired systems require you to install wiring inside your home's walls, and are less expensive when installed during construction. A wireless security system tends to be maintenance-free, but weather and other factors can degrade the video quality. Also while labor costs are less the systems generally cost more. With either system the video may be recorded for later use, viewed in real time, and motion detector software can be used, the video can be sent to a web site so the owner can remotely view the property, alarm companies can receive intrusion notifications, and summon the proper authorities.
